Hello Everyone,

Recently I configured my Apple for simple file sharing with my Win XP PC. All is working as it should, but wanting to be able to share my Mac's external hard drive contents with the PC, I investigated and was directed to SharePoints. I think I've set up my first "Normal" Share correctly, but I'm not sure how to locate it from my Win XP machine.

It seems to me that the shares intuitively recognized by Windows are user-based (\\Machine name\user name) and allow access to account folders (obviously, thus the need for a tool like SjarePoints). Must I set up a new network place in Win XP. If so, what is the propr syntax for the path? If some other solution, please help a newbie out.

Thanks

I'm back. I'm not sure what the problem was, but my external drive just showed up in my network places. This happened after I tried to browse to the external's volume name through the Add A Network Place wizard. I could see the machine, but not the volumes on it. Wringing my hands, I closed the wizard, and once back in Network Places, my external appeared.

Could anyone diredt me to doc on the features accessed on the Mac by SharePoints to accomplish this? I'm sure to keep doing it the simple. sharepoints, way, but I like to have an idea of how things actually work.

Thanks

SharePoints is just configuring the smb.conf file in your /etc folder. This file is the configuration file for samba (http://www.samba.org). Samba provides the Windows file sharing services.
