Hi there. I'm having a big problem with Sharepoints 3.5.4 on my Power Mac G5 and XBMC on my good ol' Xbox, and I was wondering if you could help.

Basically, I used my G4 as a file server to share media with my Xbox via Sharepoints. I used Version 3.5 on a Power Mac G4 running OS X 10.3.7. I shared both internal and external (eSATA) drives using Sharepoints with my Xbox without any problems.

My G4 is nearing death -- it's six years old and has become extremely unstable of late -- so I wanted to switch server duties to my Power Mac G5. I moved the eSATA card over, hooked up the hard drives, and installed Sharepoints 3.5.4 on the G5 (it's running OS X 10.4.10).

Except it doesn't work at all. I'm not sure why, but I can't connect to my G5 shares through XBMC. I've kept one hard drive shared in the G4, and that still works, but the G5 shares don't work at all.

As far as I can tell, I have configured Sharepoints exactly how I had it on the G4 (I've turned on the G4 and examined the settings to double check):

- Each hard drive has the same shared name as before, sharing the same directories as before.
- All are owned by me (ravihiranand) and belonging to the group admin; the owner has r/w permission, group and everyone else just r.
- AFS is disabled while SMB is enabled.
- Windows Sharing is on in System Preferences.
- WorkGroup is exactly the same as before.

Here are the only differences I can see in settings (not counting different SharePoints/Mac OS X version numbers, of course):

- IP address is manually set to a different address; the old server was 97, the new one is 99. I've changed the relevant setting in XBMC.
- Server NetBios Name is G5; the old one was G4.

This could be an XBMC issue but I think it's a SharePoints thing for a couple of reasons. Firstly, in terms of XBMC settings, there really isn't much to change. All I have to specify there is user:pass@ip/share/, and since the IP is the only thing that's changed I've changed that and it looks fine.

The other reason relates to that last difference, the Server NetBios Name. I just opened a new Finder window and went to Network. I selected the name of my workgroup, and two servers popped up: G4 and G5. When I double-clicked on G4, it asked me to load a share, I did, and it worked just fine. But when I double-clicked on G5, after asking me to load a share it then said "The alias G5 cannot be opened, because the original item cannot be found."

Any idea what's wrong? Apologies for the long post but I've tried to give as much detail as possible to explain my set-up. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Turns out it had nothing to do with SharePoints at all!

Under Mac OS X's Sharing prefpane, I never selected which Accounts had access to Windows Sharing... so my admin account never had access to Windows Sharing!

All solved now!
